Season 12 Episode 19
Be People of Mercy and Grace
“He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it.” - Luke 13:8
Jesus told the story of a vineyard owner who was frustrated at a fig tree that had produced no fruit in three years. The vineyard owner was ready to cut the tree down.
The vineyard worker pleaded with the owner for more time for the tree and pledged to work with the tree giving it special time and attention.
In this story, we are called to play the role of the vineyard worker. When the folk around us are on non productive and negative pathways, we don’t call for or cheer for their destruction.
Instead we are called to be people of mercy and grace who activity work for good in the lives of others. We do the best we can to create the conditions, physically, emotionally, and spiritually that will allow them flourish.
Maybe not every tree will respond to our care. But it’s our job to care not condemn.
