Supernatural: Guy Norman Bee, Director | Interview, Part 1

Season 7 Published 1 year, 7 months ago
Description

Supernatural director Guy Norman Bee interview, Part 1 🎬 The director behind Asylum, Family Matters, and Frontierland shares the scrappy movie magic behind some of Supernatural’s best-looking episodes on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

It’s Berly and LA’s first Gamble-era interview, with a director who worked on both Season 6 and Season 7. Before he started directing in 2000, Guy spent 12 years as a Steadicam operator on films like Titanic, Deep Impact, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Since then he has directed episodes of ER, Veronica Mars, Criminal Minds, Arrow, The Magicians, and plenty more. The conversation ran over two hours, so it’s split into two parts.

Episode Highlights:

  • How Supernatural was first pitched to him: classic urban legends, retold
  • David Nutter, Kim Manners, and the five-year gap before Bob Singer brought him back for Season 6
  • Asylum: shooting at Riverview, and the two Asian horror films that scared him out of his own hotel room
  • The Family Matters cage, built by Jerry Wanek’s team out of the previous episode’s spa set
  • Why the bars should block your view: a lesson from Rosemary’s Baby
  • How Rick Worthy became the Alpha Vampire, and who else was in the running
  • The cavity search: a mannequin, a grapefruit-size hole, and a little bit of foam
  • Frontierland on an abandoned Western town set, where the floorboards were rotting through
  • Jim Beaver’s heartbreak: a Western episode, and he never got on a horse
  • Matthew John Armstrong’s Phoenix, his black duster, and the clever hat trick Jensen Ackles came up with in the serape scene

Guy’s big takeaway: the unsung hero of Supernatural is how Jensen and Jared treated even the most absurd material like it was real. Fifteen seasons of fans went along with them.

“I always say I’m a nudger, not a director.” – Guy Norman Bee
