Esau symbolizes the outer man, the physical being dominated by the senses, who believes only in what he can see, touch, and rationalize. Jacob, the inner man, represents the power of imagination, the ability to supplant physical reality by mentally assuming a new state and remaining faithful to it. Over time, through repeated use of this inner power, Jacob is transformed into Israel—a state of divine realization, where man becomes one with God.

This transformation involves an internal struggle. Jacob, initially known as the deceiver, must wrestle with himself and his perceptions of reality until he is renamed Israel, "a man after God’s own heart." This signifies the point at which he has mastered his mind, conquered his fears, and fully aligned with divine consciousness.
