Season 12 Episode 17
Human Suffering Isn’t God’s Punishment
“He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans?
No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish as they did.” - Luke 13:2-3
Most of us would like to think that everyone gets what they deserve. We’d like to think bad things happen to bad people, and good things happen to good people. And if someone’s in a bad situation, it must be their fault and God is punishing them.
But the scripture says that the rain falls on the just and the unjust, and that time and chance happens to us all. Job’s friends were wrong to assume that his suffering was God’s punishment.
God didn’t give us the job of judging others. God gave us the job of loving each other, of practicing kindness, compassion and generosity. And if we don’t get back to doing our jobs full time, there will be a lot more suffering than there needs to be.
