When Our Best Isn’t Enough

“I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not." - Luke 9:40

At this point in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’s closest disciples had been with him some time. They had even begun to do some of work Jesus did healing and teaching.

But they did not yet have Jesus’s capacity. Sometimes despite their best efforts, they were unable to help. This was the case here. They themselves still had some growing to do.

We all limitations. There are things we can do. There are things we are not yet able to do. And there well may be some things we may never do. But that should not stop us from doing what we can.

It is important that we are self aware enough to work within our capacity at a particular moment in time. Likely, we will have a greater capacity later.

Until then, we must move and operate in humility and good will. We don’t blame our  lack of capacity on the people who need the help. Instead, if we can’t help, we do what we can to connect the person with the people and resources they need. Then we turn it over to God… as the elders used to say.
