Drake Powell came to UNC from Northwood High School in Pittsboro, where he played for Coach Matt Brown • Averaged 17.7 points (57% FG, 41% 3pt, 82% FT), 7.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game as a senior • Northwood went 16-0 in league play and advanced to the regional semifinals in 2024 and finished second in the state in 2021 and 2023 • First-team all-state in 2023 and 2024 • Played in the 2024 McDonald’s, Jordan Brand and Iverson all-star games • Two-time NCBCA All-State selection • Mid-Carolina 1A/2A Conference Player of the Year in 2024 and 2023 3A Central Conference player of the yearPersonal: Born Sept. 8, 2005, in Durham • The son of Dedric and Cherice Powell • His father played baseball at UNC and his mother was an all-state high school basketball player and also attended UNC • His sister, Cera, played volleyball at Virginia Tech and UConn • His brother, Deuce, was a three-sport standout at Northwood, who played basketball at Louisburg College and also attended North Carolina A&T • Cousins with UNC head coach Hubert Davis • Played two seasons of baseball in high school.
