Locked On Marlins POSTCAST: ('LIVE') Red Sox Outlast Marlins in 12, Win Series Finale 6-5 in Miami
Description
The Boston Red Sox scored four runs in the last two innings to win 6-5, outlasting the Miami Marlins and finishing off this three-game series in Miami.
----- 'LIVE' Instant Reaction from Jim GRIES Grieshaber -----
Josh Bell flied out to center field with two on and two out in the bottom of the twelfth inning- with Red Sox killer Jesus Sanchez in the on-deck circle- as the Red Sox finished off the sweep. Bell went hitless in the series.
Tyler O'Neill doubled in David Hamilton right after Hamilton's RBI groundout that scored Romy Gonzalez, giving the Red Sox the two-run lead that would prove to be the difference.
Sanchez led off the tenth inning with game-tying two-run home run, his ninth of the season, and his seventh hit of the series. Jake Burger then struck out for the fifth time in the game.
Enmanuel Valdez singled in Tyler O'Neill, right after O'Neill drove in Jarren Duran on an infield single- the same way the Red Sox scored their previous two runs in this game- to break a 2-2 tie.
The Marlins almost walked it off in the ninth, but Jaren Duran threw out Sanchez at the plate on Xavier Edwards' single, sending the game into extra innings.
Back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Jazz Chisholm, Jr., and Bryan De La Cruz tied it in the bottom of the eighth inning for Miami, right after closer Tanner Scott struck out the side in the top of the ninth. Scott has been almost unhittable over his last nine outings, allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out eleven, opponents hitting just .154 against him over that span.
Nick Pivetta pitched brilliantly for Boston, going seven strong innings- allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high ten hitters and walking just two, but the Boston bullpen- which is normally lights out- couldn't hold the lead.
Kyle Tyler- a reliever whose only career starts have come in these last three outings- pitched valiantly for Miami, allowing two runs on just three hits over 5 1/3 innings. The Red Sox really didn't hit him hard at all.
Rafael Devers had two RBI groundouts for the Red Sox, scoring David Hamilton both times, after the Red Sox had pulled off a double-steal. The Red Sox scored six runs on balls that didn't leave the infield over the last two games of this series. They also stole eight bases in these three games- five of which came this weekend.
The Marlins will welcome in the Chicago White Sox for a three-game weekend series starting tomorrow night at 7:10 ET, with Roddery Munoz facing Drew Thorpe.
We will be here 'LIVE' right after the game with your Locked On Marlins POSTCAST, hosted by Jim GRIES Grieshaber.
We hope you've had a very Happy 4th of July... Happy Birthday America!
