It’s the process of cutting through the skin and tracheal rings to establish an airway, typically done in emergencies or as part of a planned medical intervention.

• ​ Tracheostomy refers to the result of that procedure: the opening (stoma) in the trachea that is maintained for breathing, often with a tube inserted to keep it open. It also encompasses the broader clinical concept, including the care and management of the airway after the surgery.

In short:

• ​ Tracheotomy = the act of cutting (the surgery).
• ​ Tracheostomy = the outcome (the hole and its use).

In modern medical practice, “tracheostomy” is the more commonly used term to describe both the procedure and the condition, but technically, they’re distinct. For example, a surgeon performs a tracheotomy to create a tracheostomy.
