Holding Space
Description
Morning Mantra: “People don’t want to be talked out of their feelings, they want to be heard, seen, and understood.”
What does it mean to hold space for someone? You might have heard this saying.
It means we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they’re on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, or trying to impact the outcome. When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and open the door for understanding.
Holding space is the art of being with someone’s pain and allowing them to have their experience without making it about you. Holding space is the quiet, powerful force of present loving connection. Holding space is an “I love you and I’m not going anywhere while you process this emotion.” Holding space is patience and eye contact when someone is scared or overwhelmed by their own feelings.
To hold space begin by offering the other person your full attention and presence. Practice listening deeply with the intention of trying to understand the other person’s experience. Listen more than you speak, allow moments of silence. Accept the other person‘s emotional experience without trying to judge it.
Sometimes, being there for someone simply means holding space. You don’t have to offer a solution; you don’t have to compare a similar experience of yours. What they need is for you to just listen to them and validate their emotional expression.
Through the space holding process, every moment of authentic giving from you is also an unexpected blessing to be received by you.
