This change potentially allowed for quicker implementation and broader application of tariffs. Initially, tariffs were imposed on steel and aluminium, with exemptions negotiated for some nations. However, in 2025, tariffs were levied on China and Canada under IEEPA, sparking retaliatory measures from China. These later tariffs were justified by declaring a national emergency at the U.S. border due to illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Moreover, tariffs on EU steel and aluminium were suspended and extended for two-year periods.
