Il 23 agosto 1939 Hitler e Stalin firmarono un patto di non aggressione, e il 1 settembre Hitler invase la Polonia sperando che le potenze democratiche, Francia e Inghilterra, non sarebbero intervenute. Si sbagliava: quel giorno scoppiò una guerra che si concluse dopo sei anni di morte e distruzione su una scala che il mondo non aveva mai conosciuto prima.
