Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.
The USL announced plans yesterday to add a D1 professional league on top of their existing USL Championship and USL League One structure. They're planning to get started in 2027 or 2028 and will have a number of criteria they'll use in determining which teams are going to be selected to join it and in earning the D1 status from the US Soccer Federation.
Hopefully, the USL doesn't hurt what is a great, thriving league at the moment to chase this. The growth over the years of USL Championship, USL League One, USL League Two, the W-League, and the launch of the women's Super League, along with the growth on the academy side is one of the great success stories of US Soccer history. This new level of competition has to enhance the rest of the USL ecosystem, not take away from it. This will be one of the big stories to watch as we see where soccer in this country grows in the decade following the World Cup.
The Premier League's new Squad Cost Ratio rules won't take effect yet, they'll stick with the Profit & Sustainability Rules for next season.
No club in Premier League history has come back from more than 5 points back with 14 games to go, Arsenal are currently 7 points behind Liverpool.
Leverkusen hosts Bayern in a top-of-the-table clash in the Bundesliga. A win puts them within 5 points of the leaders from Munich, a loss likely ends the title race.
Zlatan has become irritated by Sergio Conceiçao and he's already being scrutinized at Milan. He just arrived, but welcome to Serie A.
