Reject Your Own Negative Self Stereotypes

“We must reject not only the stereotypes that others have of us but also those that we have of ourselves.” - Shirley Chisholm

Most of us would like to think we are immune to the stereotypes that larger society heap on us and other folk. But that is probably just not true.

Back in the 1930s, Kenneth and Mamie Clark devised a test where black children ages 3-7 were given four dolls. The dolls were the same except two had a dark skin and two had light skin. The Clarks asked the children questions such as which dolls were "nice" and which were "bad" and "which doll is most like you?"

The results showed the majority of black children preferred the white dolls to the black dolls. The children would say the black dolls were "bad" and the white dolls looked most like them. To the Clarks, these tests proved that the children had already internalized negative messages about Blacks at an early age.

As recently as 2021, this study has yielded the same results.

These negative messages, images and stereotypes invade us during early childhood. Our job as adults is to recognize, reject, and replace them.
