In November 2022, four University of Idaho students were found fatally stabbed in their off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho. The arrest affidavit for Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old criminology PhD student at Washington State University, details the investigation leading to his arrest. A key piece of evidence was a tan leather knife sheath discovered at the crime scene, which bore DNA matching Kohberger's profile. Additionally, surveillance footage captured a white Hyundai Elantra near the victims' home around the time of the murders; Kohberger owned a similar vehicle. Cellphone records indicated that Kohberger's phone was near the crime scene during the early hours of November 13 and had been in the vicinity of the victims' residence on at least twelve occasions prior to the murders.
Further implicating Kohberger, one of the surviving roommates reported seeing a masked figure with bushy eyebrows inside the house on the night of the murders, a description consistent with Kohberger's appearance. Following the issuance of an arrest warrant, Kohberger was apprehended at his parents' home in Pennsylvania in late December 2022. He faces four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. As of January 2025, Kohberger has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and his trial is scheduled to begin in June 2025.
