Is Mulan the first movie that completely bypasses the "Disney Proxy" where a child is separated from their parents? Instead, Mulan is a bit older than other Disney protagonists, and willingly leaves in place of her father. This turns the Disney Proxy theory on its head, and stands out as the first big exception to what has otherwise been a very consistent theme.
The main occult theme of this movie relates to mastering the elements and then nature itself. The original poem the movie is based on may or may not be historical fact, but it might not matter since stories live longer than facts.
