Emotional Connections: The Moments That Shape Us

Episode 139 Published 1 year, 7 months ago
Description

What do you actually remember of your life? Not the years. Just the moments.

I have done five hundred miles round Cornwall in my electric wheelchair this year, and what I have kept from it is moments. Everything is stored that way. I met a man who told me about being flown to Salisbury at eighteen, and I had been in that same tight space, chewing my knees, and suddenly it was like I had known him all my life. The ones that shaped me most are the rock bottoms. That is why I cry easily now, and I do not think that is a fault.

One thing to try: Build one moment on purpose today with somebody. In twenty years it will matter more than the day did.

In this episode

  • (1:26) Everything is stored as moments
  • (2:53) The dog and the gate he never forgot
  • (4:01) Eighteen years old, flown to Salisbury
  • (5:18) Two moments connected, and a stranger I had known all my life
  • (6:29) The afternoon with the toy car that will matter in twenty years
  • (7:35) The ones that shaped me were the rock bottoms

  • (11:49) Collect the good ones. Learn from the rest
