Description
Supernatural Season 7, Episode 21, Reading Is Fundamental recap 📜 A lightning strike, a stone tablet, and a very stressed-out honor student kick off the chaos on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The boys finally crack open the hunk of clay from the last episode. At the same moment, lightning storms hit everywhere, Cas sits up in his hospital bed, and Kevin Tran (Osric Chau), a straight-A high schooler in Michigan, gets struck right through his bedroom ceiling.
Episode Highlights:
- Kevin Tran’s terrifyingly organized schedule, a blank SAT essay, and a Mortal Kombat-worthy lightning strike
- Edgar (Benito Martinez) workshops the floor plan for the Leviathans’ human slaughterhouse
- Dean’s “big chopper daddy” summary of the Leviathan backstory
- Cas wakes up, says “pull my finger,” and lets out a very not-giggly giggle
- Metatron vs. Megatron: Sam’s dumb moment of the season
- Cas apologizes with a game of Sorry, and Dean answers: “You’re not sorry, you’re playing Sorry”
- Meg (Rachel Miner) is done being the faithful little nurse and second-class citizen
- Angels threaten the boys with two fingers (Berly’s favorite part)
- Cas, the bees, and a heart-to-heart with Sam about the wall
- Kevin’s fear of the basement “sex torture dungeon,” Dean’s paper-bag pep talk, and an ending that has the hosts worried for Kevin
Written and directed by Ben Edlund, and Berly isn’t surprised. She doesn’t think anyone else could have pulled off a script this chaotic, and every random line fits. Both hosts love Zen Cas, the “live moment by moment” version, and Kevin is pretty funny. The gore is light: Cas gets beaten bloody, and there’s a nasty Leviathan surprise at the end.
In the lore segment, Berly goes looking for a real-life Word of God tablet and finds the Emerald Tablet of Thoth in a Greek Reporter piece. It’s said to be 42 plates of emerald holding the secrets of the universe, and legends trace it to Hermes Trismegistus’s tomb, Adam and Eve’s son Seth, the Ark of the Covenant, and even Atlantis. It has never been found, but “as above, so below” comes from it. Isaac Newton translated it and reportedly spent 30 years chasing the philosopher’s stone.
“Did you know that a cat’s penis is sharply barbed along its shaft? I know for a fact that females were not consulted about that.” – Castiel
