Mark Montgomery was a 4-year starter at Michigan State under Jud Heathcote. Twice he returned to East Lansing to serve as an assistant coach under Tom Izzo. For a decade, he was also the head coach at Northern Illinois University.
Montgomery is in the middle of his first season at head coach at the University of Detroit Mercy, hoping to turn around a program that suffered through a 1-31 season in 2023-24.
On this episode of The Dave LewAllen Podcast, Montgomery outlines his vision for the program, the challenges that exist in a rebuild as well as the changes in the landscape of college basketball. He also discusses his playing days, identifies family, teammates, and the coaches who have had a major impact on his life and he tells me why he loves what he does.
