Jesus tells us in the gospel of today's mass the challenge we all face, namely, either to choose God or creatures, either to trust God at His Word or creatures with what they offer us. Jesus exemplifies this dynamic with His experience with the rich young man who asked Him what he needed to do to gain eternal life. Jesus asked him about the commandments, to which the man replied that he had followed them well. What else was lacking to him? Then,. Jesus challenged him to sell all he had and to come follow Him. To that proposal, the young fellow left sad, for he did not think he could part from his possessions, which was a lot. We face this choice every day. Either we decide to follow God and His Will, or we pursue a creature or creatures at the expense of God. In the end, God asks us to trust Him at His word. Here, many of us fail because certain pagan realities have affected us, like materialism, hedonism, consumerism, etc.
