Supernatural Season 7, Episode 18, Party On, Garth recap 🍶 Garth Fitzgerald IV (DJ Qualls) calls in a favor, and the only way to see the monster is to get drunk, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Garth finally gets his own case, and he’s sure he wrapped it up in record time. Then the bodies keep coming, all tied to one family and their microbrewery. So he calls in the Winchesters. Berly and LA spot nods to The Ring and The Grudge all the way through.
Episode Highlights:
- Campfire ghost stories about Jenny Greentree, and a ginger party crasher who’s had way too much
- Garth’s solo intro: his own theme music, an El Camino (just like Gordon’s), and a badge that demands respect
- A slow-motion walk away from a burning grave (fire safety: zero)
- Garth shows up in a soldier’s uniform, because somebody has to bring the costumes back
- “Douchebag” beer that turns out to be delicious, a hot tub suite, and Garth’s skinny-dipping depth perception
- An orange juice mix-up, and a Grudge-style visitor in the kitchen
- Mr. Fizzles the sock puppet gets a confession out of a little girl
- Sam and Dean get loaded on purpose, plus the most cautious cab driver in Supernatural history
- A final scene that wrecks Berly
Written by Adam Glass and directed by Phil Sgriccia, who shot the Mr. Fizzles interrogation almost entirely in close-ups on the puppet, with DJ Qualls’s face hidden until the end. The gore is good: the body in the tree takes first place, and the fingers moving under the shirt take second. LA loved having Garth back and the get-drunk-to-see-it twist. Berly loved that it’s an obstacle the show hasn’t used before, and that it’s the sober brother who needs a drunk Sam to see.
In the lore segment, LA covers the Shojo, the “Japanese spirit of spirits.” It’s an orangutan-like water spirit with orange fur and a seaweed skirt, it loves sake, and it’s been spotted keeping the party going at breweries long after last call. It also brews its own liquor: good people get a perfect buzz, and evil people get poison. Both hosts agree that an orangutan on screen wouldn’t have worked, and the J-horror look was the right call.
“You have the CEO of the douchiest microbrew in the US gagged in your hot tub.” – Dean
