On January 7, 2025, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed in an apparent home invasion at an apartment complex near East Jewell Avenue and South Havana Street in west Aurora. Police responded to the scene at approximately 6:15 a.m. and found the victim with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

The incident is under investigation. According to Aurora Police Capt. Marc Paolino, two male suspects entered the apartment where several people were already inside, leading to a physical struggle and multiple shots being fired. No one else was injured in the shooting.
