How We Put It Behind Us…

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…” -Philippians 3:13-14

We have all made mistakes. Nearly all of us have said things we wish we hadn’t. We have done things we’d do differently or not at all. Some of us are burdened with guilt and shame. Paul himself was complicit in the death of Stephen.

It’s important for us to learn from the past, but we never want to be prisoner to it. Go ahead and forgive yourself. God already has. Forgive the person who wronged you. They were toxic and broken themselves. Leave them in the past, particularly if they’re still toxic and broken.

Centering ourselves in the here and now, we press forward, ever forward. Visualize yourself breaking your shackles. See yourself tossing those burdens overboard. Then see yourself raising your sail and sailing away.

We may not have arrived, but we know  our direction.
