Surviving and Thriving: Empowering Change in Lives and Livelihoods

Published 1 year ago
Description

In this episode of Up+Adam, we delve into the shifting tides in the wine industry, where significant changes in consumer preferences and increasing regulatory discussions are reshaping the landscape. Wine consumption trends are evolving, with a noticeable decline in overall consumption and a pivot toward lighter options like white and rosé wines. On top of that, the U.S. Surgeon General has proposed adding cancer warning labels to alcoholic beverages, a move that could have far-reaching implications for the industry.

What does all of this mean for wine professionals trying to navigate these challenges, or for enthusiasts who love to share and enjoy wine? How can the industry innovate to stay relevant while embracing the preferences of a new generation of consumers, who are increasingly focused on mindful drinking and sustainability? We’ll unpack these questions and more

We also feature a conversation with our partners and the transformative work of Lumina Alliance, a San Luis Obispo-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault (SA) and domestic violence (DV). Our guests, Yessi Alonso and Leydi Rios, lead the organization’s transitional housing program, providing safe havens and comprehensive support for individuals rebuilding their lives after experiencing abuse.

We explore the pervasive nature of SA and DV, challenging common misconceptions about who can be affected. Often, people think it could never happen to someone they know, especially those who seem strong, capable, and like they have it all together. But the truth is, abuse knows no “type,” and it could be impacting someone closer to you than you realize. Yessi and Leydi share insights into the challenges survivors face and discuss how Lumina Alliance’s programs offer pathways to healing and independence. Whether you think this issue impacts you directly or not, this episode might just change your perspective—and maybe even inspire action.
