The sermon "Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness)" emphasizes God as the ultimate standard of righteousness amidst humanity's moral failings and highlights our need for divine intervention. "Jehovah Tsidkenu" reveals God’s unchanging holiness, integrity, and justice. Righteousness is the essence of God’s character, as affirmed in Psalm 119:137, and stands in stark contrast to humanity’s inherent sinfulness (Romans 3:10-12), which creates a chasm between us and God, underscoring the need for a Savior.
Abraham, the father of faith, exemplifies righteousness through obedience and faith. In Genesis 12:1-3, Abraham’s trust in God’s promises, despite uncertainties, illustrates that true righteousness begins with faith and reliance on God, not human effort. His encounter with Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18-20) further foreshadows Christ, the ultimate Priest and King. By giving Melchizedek a tithe, Abraham acknowledges God’s authority and the necessity of grace for righteousness, establishing that true righteousness is a gift from God, not self-generated.
Despite the covenant, Israel repeatedly turned away from God, symbolized by "broken cisterns" in Jeremiah 2:13—efforts to attain righteousness through self-reliance, which ultimately lead to spiritual emptiness. God, however, remains merciful, calling His people back to Him. Jeremiah 3:12 reflects His invitation to return, offering restoration and renewal even to the rebellious.
The sermon concludes by affirming that righteousness comes solely through faith in Christ, who bridges the gap between God’s holiness and our sinfulness. God’s grace, extended through Jesus, invites us to forsake self-reliance and embrace His righteousness, restoring our relationship with Him. This message serves as a call to faith and dependence on God as the sole source of true righteousness.
