मिथिलाधिपति: जनकमहाराज: बहुधा व्यापृतः अपि तस्य गुरो: आश्रमम् आगत्य सश्रद्धम् उपदेशं श्रुत्वा अल्पमपि दर्पम् अप्रदर्शयन् यथाशक्ति गुरो: सेवां करोति स्म । अत: तस्मिन् गुरो: प्रीति: अधिका आसीत् । बहवः शिष्या: एतत् न असहन्त । एतत् जानन् ऋषिः, काञ्चन परीक्षां कृत्वा शिष्येभ्यः दर्शयति यत् किमर्थं महाराजे तस्य प्रीतिः अधिका अस्तीति। का सा परीक्षा इति कथां श्रुत्वा जानीमः ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)
The king of Mithila, Janaka Maharaja, though often busy with various duties, would visit his guru's ashram with great devotion. He would listen attentively to the teachings and, without showing any arrogance, serve his guru to the best of his ability. As a result, his guru had a special affection for him. Many other disciples could not tolerate this. Knowing this, the sage decided to conduct a test and show the disciples the reason for the special affection the king received.
