Advent 2024: Afraid
Description
In this episode of the Village Church podcast, Pastor Susan steps into the rhythm of Advent’s unfolding story, bringing us to the third week. Here, she invites us into Matthew's telling of Joseph’s journey, one so profoundly tied to Jesus. Joseph, a man faced with fear and uncertainty, stands at the crossroads of human frailty and divine calling.
Pastor Susan reflects on Joseph's response—a life shaped by obedience and trust. When fear rose, Joseph acted. When anxiety stirred, he listened. He took Jesus and Mary to Egypt, fleeing into the unknown, and then returned when God spoke again. His actions, though swift, were marked by a deep responsiveness to God's voice.
Through this lens, Susan doesn’t merely tell Joseph’s story but calls us to consider our own fears, our own anxieties. How do we respond when God speaks, even when the way forward feels uncertain? This episode gently but firmly challenges us to follow Joseph’s example: to trust, to obey, and to take the next step, no matter how small or daunting it may seem.
Pastors Eric, Mark, Susan, Daniel, and other Village leaders open the Scriptures as the witness to God’s kingdom breaking into our lives. Scripture gives us more than abstract ideas. It is the Word of God, given to form us, confront us, comfort us, and teach us how to follow Jesus.
Each episode invites us to listen and respond. We are learning to understand the Bible more faithfully; we are also learning how to live as God’s renewed people.
Week by week, our pastors and leaders talk about the practices of Christian discipleship, including prayer, fasting, generosity, Scripture memory, worship, and life together. These practices belong to a whole life formed around Jesus.
The podcast also speaks to ordinary places where faith is lived; our relationships, finances, habits, struggles, joys, and decisions. The gospel speaks to what we believe. It also teaches us how to live in the present age as people who belong to the kingdom of God.
