The Liturgy of the Word continues to keep us on our toes, looking forward to a certain coming of someone else. Some had thought that St. John the Baptist was the Christ already. However, St. John spares no effort to clarify that he was not the Messiah. He did that by fostering in his listeners a certain hope for still another one, who would be much greater than him. In the meantime, we continue to prepare ourselves. The Baptist fostered in his listeners the attitude of asking about what they must do. The gospel lists some professions represented by the practitioners who ask that question, we need to ask ourselves too. This is required because unless we know what to do, then we would not be able to assess whether we fulfilled it or not. Without this realization, we would not be able to ask for pardon and thus be contrite of those sins. Then, we are best prepared for the Savior because He is savior in that He comes to forgive us our sins, for which we offer penances for.
