Never Satisfied

There are three things that are never satisfied—
no, four that never say, “Enough!”:

16

the grave,
     the barren womb,
     the thirsty desert,
     the blazing fire.

17

The eye that mocks a father
     and despises a mother’s instructions
will be plucked out by ravens of the valley
     and eaten by vultures.

Agur offers riddles about things that are never satisfied: the grave (Sheol), which will always accept more as long as people live; a woman longing for a child, who won't feel content until she has one; and wildfires, like those in California, that consume more and more even when efforts are made to stop them. He also mentions how in arid regions, flash floods happen because the hard, dry ground can't absorb the rare rains.

The Ten Commandments instruct us to honor our parents, but Agur reminds us of the serious consequences of not doing so.

Think about this: God didn’t include "Honor your parents" in the Ten Commandments as just a suggestion. Respect for parents is key to the strength and health of families. Unfortunately, modern media often undermines this. Movies and sitcoms that portray fathers as bumbling fools or parents as clueless targets for ridicule may seem funny, but they harm family dynamics. Teen movies that highlight rebellion or depict parents as "too out of touch" make teenage angst and moodiness seem normal, encouraging disrespect rather than fostering healthy relationships.

Honoring our parents is essential for families and society to thrive.
