"Interpretation or Perversion"
CSC Talk Radio # 3530 – December 6, 2024 – Interpretation of the law, or perversion of the law Preemptive pardons? Somehow I don’t believe the Constitution had such pardons in mind.
Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution grants the president the power to issue pardons for offenses against the United States, with the exception of cases of impeachment:
Pardon power: The president can grant pardons to remove penalties and disabilities and restore civil rights. A pardon can be granted before or after a conviction.
Types of clemency: The president’s pardoning power includes four types of clemency: pardon, amnesty, commutation, and reprieve.
Limitations: The president can only pardon crimes committed under federal law. For example, the president can’t pardon a murder conviction that took place under state law, unless the murder was charged as a federal crime.
Influence: The framers of the Constitution were influenced by the English legal tradition of pardon, which dates back to the 7th century. Alexander Hamilton introduced the concept of the presidential pardon at the Constitutional Convention.
To begin the pardon process, you must apply to the Office of the Pardon Attorney. There is also a five-year waiting period after being released from confinement.
What if? The scripture that most directly addresses the concept of “when the guilty are caught” is Proverbs 6:31, which states: “But if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house.”. This verse essentially says that if a thief is caught, they will be punished severely, even to the point of losing all their possessions.
