The halakhic principle that “zachin l’adam she’lo be’fanav” allows other people to act on my behalf, as long as it is clear that the action in question is beneficial for me. Our mishnah deals with the question of whether “zachin” is effective for a child, for an adult or both. Today we’ll explore the rishonim and their various positions on the nature of the halakhic mechanism of zachin, its scope, and its relationship to another halakhic concept: that of shelichut.
