Description
Supernatural Season 7, Episode 11, Adventures in Babysitting recap 🦇 A hunter’s daughter, a pair of truck-stop Vetalas, and a super obsessed Dean kick off the back half of the season on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
It’s the mid-season premiere. The boys are still reeling from Death’s Door, Dean has one thing on his mind, and a call to Bobby’s phone sends Sam to help a girl whose hunter dad never came home. Plus, Berly reads a Facebook review from Amber Nicole Roberts, who recommends earphones in public. (Yes, you can leave reviews on Facebook too.)
Episode Highlights:
- A cold open with one clear moral: tip your servers
- Dean’s wall of Dick Roman clippings, and the dick jokes that follow
- Chrissy (Madison McLaughlin) has 911 on speed dial (one button, buddy), but Sam is big and hot, so he gets in
- Frank Devereaux (Kevin McNally) is back, with his gun aimed at Dean’s foot
- Frank cracks part of Bobby’s numbers, and Berly questions the math
- Costumes are back! Dean is a power line technician in a cherry picker, and Frank is the manager
- LA briefly thinks the surveillance target is Sarah Palin
- Frank’s tough-love advice for Dean, and a backstory both hosts want a spinoff about
- Chrissy has big brother, little sister chemistry with Dean (and says Sam is the size of a car)
- A Vetala den, Crypt Keeper deaths, and a final close-up from Jensen Ackles
Both hosts adore Frank and want more of him. Berly usually finds too-big-for-her-britches teens annoying, but Chrissy won her over. Berly found Jensen Ackles’s last scene heartbreaking. There’s barely any gore, and the new death effect is a take-it-or-leave-it.
In the lore segment, Berly digs into an Atlas Obscura article on the Vetala. It’s a trickster spirit from Indian folklore that hangs upside down in trees and can see the past, present, and future. The legend dates back to the 11th century, in a collection of stories where King Vikrama tries to capture a Vetala that keeps escaping with riddles (wrong move, and your head explodes). Then Sir Richard Burton’s very free translation turned it into a vampire, and that version may have inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
“Dick Roman is not a Leviathan. Gwyneth Paltrow is not a Leviathan.” – Frank
Your turn, hunters: Do you buy that Chrissy never snooped in her dad’s office? And whose backstory do you want next: Frank’s, or someone else’s?
