कस्मिंश्चित् वने कश्चन ऋषिः कांश्चन शुकान् पालयति स्म । सः तान् उपदिशति स्म यत् "व्याधः आगच्छेत्, सः जालं प्रसारयेत्, परन्तु वयं तस्य समीपं न गमिष्यामः" इति । एकदा ऋषिः भिक्षाटनार्थम् अन्यं ग्रामम् अगच्छत् । मार्गे गच्छन् व्याधः शुकान् दृष्ट्वा तान् ग्रहीतुम् इच्छन् जालं प्रसार्य तस्मिन् किञ्चित् फलम् अस्थापयत् । किञ्चित्कालानन्तरं व्याधः निद्रां गतः, यदा व्याधस्य जागरणम् अभवत् तदा सः दृष्ट्वान् यत् सर्वे शुकाः “व्याधः आगच्छेत्, सः जालं प्रसारयेत्....” इति गायन्तः जाले गृहीताः आसन् । तेषां मूर्खतां दृष्ट्वा हसन् व्याधः सर्वान् शुकान् नीतवान् ।

In a certain forest, a sage was raising some parrots, and he taught them to say, "The hunter is coming; he spreads a net, but we shall not go near it." One day, the Sage went to a village. A hunter passing by saw the parrots and, wanting to capture them, spread a net and placed some fruit on it, thinking, “Perhaps some foolish parrot will come for the fruit and fall into the net.” After a while, the hunter woke up and saw the parrots singing, “The hunter is coming; he spreads a net, but we shall not go near it,” yet they were all caught in the net. Laughing at their foolishness, the hunter took all the parrots away in the net.
