Description

Supernatural Season 7, Episode 10, Death’s Door recap 🚪 Bobby races through his own memories with a Reaper (Henri Lubatti) on his heels and a message his boys need, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Content warning for depictions of abuse.

Picking up right where How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters left off, Sam and Dean rush Bobby to the hospital. Meanwhile, Bobby is stuck inside his own head, hunting for the right door. It’s the mid-season finale, and it’s not a fun one. It’s a beautiful one, and Berly cried quite a bit. Plus, a shout-out to Supernatural Then and Now’s interview with Jim Beaver about Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Go listen.

Episode Highlights:

  • The zoom into Bobby’s bullet wound, and Berly’s one note on the transition
  • Déjà vu in the forest, and a note Bobby scribbles on paper that only exists in his head
  • Karen is back from Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, and Berly has a theory about what she was really telling Bobby
  • Steven Williams returns as Rufus, in a pest control costume, for a ghost bride who calls Bobby a heartbreaker
  • That ghost-burning ceiling effect, last spotted in The Mentalists
  • The most laid-back Reaper in Supernatural, who just wants to finish his shift
  • Dean’s very passionate Chuck Norris debate, plus Berly’s favorite Chuck Norris jokes
  • Bobby teaching young Dean to play catch, in a turtleneck, flannel, and puffy vest combo
  • Dean vs. the organ donor guy, and Dick Roman (James Patrick Stuart) smiling from a limo
  • A Reaper trap with perfect geometry, a memory Bobby has dodged all episode, and an ending that leaves everyone hanging

Written by Sarah Gamble and directed by Robert Singer. Berly called the director before the credits rolled, thanks to the wide-angle lens he used in When the Levee Breaks. Both hosts loved getting Bobby and Rufus as a duo. Berly loved the hazy look of the coma world, and Jim Beaver plays the full range of emotion. There’s no real gore, but bring tissues. Berly’s only complaint: the popcorn-and-licorice best memory would have hit harder with young Sam and Dean.

In the lore segment, LA covers a Hyperallergic article on the science behind your life flashing before your eyes. An 87-year-old epilepsy patient died during an EEG scan, and a team led by Raul Vicente at the University of Tartu in Estonia captured the first look at a dying human brain. The gamma waves pointed to memory recall, the same kind of brain activity seen in dreaming and meditation. Then a blog from Umbria takes the hosts to Assisi and its medieval doors of the dead. These were half doors with a stone ledge, built so a coffin could leave the house without going through the main entrance.

“Because they’re my boys.” – Bobby

Your turn, hunters: Was Karen telling Bobby she was pregnant, or is Berly reading too much into it? And which memory would you save for last?
