The Flagship: Recapping a wild week in Longhorn Nation

The Flagship: Recapping a wild week in Longhorn Nation

The last week has been full of twists and turns for Texas faithful. Not only did the Longhorns announce the decision to not extend the contract of women's basketball coach Karen Aston, Texas officials followed up the news with a new hire just days after Aston's release. Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte made his fourth head coaching hire since he arrived at Texas when the Longhorns announced former Mississippi State head coach Vic Schaefer would be making the move to Austin, Texas to take over the women's basketball program. But the news did not end there. In a bombshell story, broken by Horns247 Monday night, University of Texas president Greg Fenves is leaving the Forty Acres to accept a job at Emory University after spending the last five years as the president at Texas.

To add to those two stories, the Longhorns football team received some positive news to start the week when redshirt senior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor made the decision to withdraw his name from the NCAA Transfer Portal and intends to play his final season of college football at Texas.

In this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with the latest happenings on the Forty Acres, including how Okafor's return to the Longhorns adds a major boost for the offensive line ahead of the 2020 season. Chip and Taylor turn their focus to some football news away from the field pertaining to the Longhorns' head coach. In an exclusive interview with Horns247 earlier this week, fourth-year head coach Tom Herman opened up about his family life and upbringing, which has been a driving force for Herman to help people in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Flagship then welcomes in Horns247 publisher Bobby Burton, who was also instrumental in breaking the news of Fenves' departure from Texas. Burton and Brown weigh in on the behind the scenes happenings that led to Fenves accepting the job at Emory, and discuss some football matters after Okafor's return to the team.

Chip and Taylor close the show with some quick-hitter nuggets on the Longhorns' new basketball coach and all that Schaefer brings to Texas after a very successful coaching career spent at Mississippi State.
