Season 7 Episode 9 Published 1 year, 11 months ago
Description

Supernatural Season 7, Episode 9, How to Win Friends and Influence Monsters recap 🥪 A town full of people gets stoned on turducken, a few go feral, and Dean can’t put the sandwich down on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Sam, Dean, and Bobby are hiding from the Leviathans off the grid, and Dean is not coping well. Then a glamping couple gets snatched into the trees in the New Jersey woods, and the locals start whispering about the Jersey Devil. Berly and LA follow the trail from a gutted monster to a suspiciously popular sandwich, with plenty of dick jokes along the way.

Episode Highlights:

  • The glampers brought a full headboard, nightstands, and wooden lamps into a tent, and Berly cannot let it go
  • Dean has had enough of cold showers and cold Hot Pockets, while Bobby sticks to Frank Devereaux’s off-grid playbook
  • A Biggerson’s callback to the rabbit’s foot episode, plus a pitch for a real Biggerson’s pop-up for Supernatural’s 20th anniversary (just make the sandwich not evil)
  • Ranger Rick (Sean Rogerson) is stoned out of his mind, and a waiter named Brandon has a meltdown: Do you want to look like a hostess?
  • Berly tells the dance class story behind her all-time favorite comeback
  • Sam’s hair looks great in the forest, and Bobby’s tracking lessons reveal where the boys learned to hunt
  • Directed by Guy Norman Bee, who also gave us Asylum, so Berly asks what changed visually this season. Plus, the hosts hunt for his rubber duckies
  • The grossest monster in Supernatural history (according to Berly), and a kitchen-table autopsy while Dean whines that he’s hungry
  • Bobby and Sam get a rare one-on-one stakeout to talk about Dean, codependency, and Lucifer
  • Dick Roman’s very bad Photoshop, a dramatic bib, and a cliffhanger that leaves the van dead quiet (but left us screaming)

Written by Ben Edlund, so the dick jokes make sense. LA had fun with stoned Dean, but Berly saw a Dean who was depressed, not happy. Both loved the Sam and Bobby scenes, and Jim Beaver’s monologues land hard. James Patrick Stuart makes Dick Roman a campy, gloriously dramatic villain. There’s barely any gore, but the goo makes up for it.

In the lore segment, LA digs into the Jersey Devil with the Pinelands Preservation Alliance. The creature is described as kangaroo-like, with a horse’s face, a dog’s head, bat wings, horns, and a tail. The legend starts with Mrs. Leeds of Estellville and her 13th child. In 1938 it was named the country’s only state demon, and at one point there was a $100,000 bounty on it, dead or alive. Then a CNBC piece from a Harvard-trained nutritionist breaks down four additives that make you hungrier: MSG, refined flour, refined sugar, and gluten. It also covers leptin, the hormone that tells you you’re full. Ranger Rick, take notes.

“If you die before me, I’ll kill you.” – Bobby
