Social Media is a set of tools that are used for marketing.
That’s how I see these platforms.
Marketing tools. Bring people’s attention to something you do – let them know about something. It generates interest and funnels to your programs and brand.
It doesn’t make it evil or inauthentic.
It just means I understand what it’s for and what it can do.
It also doesn’t mean you need to be a business – although social media plays a part in marketing yourself – self-branding (that’s a huge topic, which we'll get to later).
Social media’s backbone is advertising, so every platform eventually will give in to generating revenue when it reaches a certain point over making sure that your posts get reach. This means Businesses will take advantage and the reach will drop for the individual (for you, the Cosplayer or Creative).
Behind any social platform is a business that wants to profit – platforms reach certain user numbers and they shift. Facebook / Instagram can (and do) reduce your free engagement because they have so much traffic paying to play, and there are enough users to see all the ads.
Other platforms are still growing – TikTok for sure - I'm seeing more and more of you moving to TikTok.
