Description

Synopsis

The Four Species correspond to the four types of Jews. (1) The esrog has both taste and fragrance – Jews who have Torah study (“your wisdom and understanding” – they understand and internalize Torah like tasty “food”) and mitzvos (“A decree I have decreed,” which they fulfill with kabbolas ol, an encompassing quality, like “fragrance”). (2) The lulav has taste but no fragrance – Jews whose “occupation is Torah. (3) The hadas has fragrance but no taste – working people, Jews whose primary focus is performing mitzvos in the world (though they, too, have fixed times for Torah study as required). (4) The aravah has no fragrance and no taste – Jews without Torah or mitzvos. And the mitzvah is performed only when all four species, including the “aravah,” are combined. The reason the bracha mentions only the lulav (and not esrog, even though the esrog has taste and fragrance) is because the esrog’s focus isn’t primarily on Torah; we emphasize the lulav because the year must begin with Torah study in a manner of “one’s occupation.” The same applies every day: before going out to the world, one must specifically focus on Torah study.
