Description
Supernatural Season 7, Episode 7, The Mentalists recap 🔮 Psychics are dying in Lily Dale, a colorful little town full of mediums, crystal balls, and fake séances, and a week and a half after splitting up, Sam and Dean end up working the same case, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
The episode opens with Grandma Goldie leading a séance full of gimmicks (switches, vents, the works), until the Ouija planchette floats up off the board and gives us our 52nd blood splooge of the series. Dean, in a freshly hot-wired Dodge, rolls into town and finds Sam ordering coffee at the café, and after about two minutes of awkward silence, Sam agrees to work together. (Are we sure, Sam?) The boys meet Goldie's skeptical granddaughter Melanie, a spoon bender named Nikolai, emporium owner Jimmy Tomorrow, and a lot of psychics handing out business cards.
Episode Highlights:
- Grandma Goldie's séance tricks, and the radio DJ: you'd think they would've seen it coming
- Dean, the fuzzy dice, and his new ride
- Sam caving to a team-up way too fast after the Amy fight (we had questions)
- Nikolai the spoon bender, and a very bad day for his cutlery drawer
- The siblings exhibit at the museum, and the Campbells (no, not THOSE Campbells)
- Kate's fabulous cheekbones
- A message from the beyond, from a certain Ellen
- Dean's not-so-calm confession about Amy
- Sam's shovel swing at the grave (we rewound it. Twice.)
- Sam busting into a Lamaze class, gun drawn
The verdict: written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker and directed by Mike Rohl, whose work we always love (The Usual Suspects, On the Head of a Pin, Appointment in Samarra). The colorful town and the séance theme were adorable, but season seven is feeling a bit more CW YA soap opera than classic horror-inspired Supernatural for us.
In the lore segment, we dig into Cassadaga, Florida, the psychic capital of the world: medium George Colby's 1875 instructions from a spirit guide named Seneca, the spiritualist camp founded in 1894, its heyday of séances and trance mediums, and today's 57-acre historic district with Victorian homes, local mediums, and the Cassadaga Hotel's friendly resident ghost, Arthur.
Waiter: "Fantastic. You are a virile manifestation of the divine."
Dean: "What the hell did he just say?"
Your turn, hunters: Did Sam forgive Dean too fast? And would YOU book a reading in Cassadaga? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
