Jesus Skipped the Revenge and We Should Too (Advent 16)

Jesus began his public ministry by opening the scroll to Isaiah 61 and reading these words:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4: 18-19)

Jesus specifically didn’t read the next part, “and the day of vengeance of our God” (Isaiah 61:2) Vengeance and retribution were not part of Jesus’s mission. They shouldn’t be part of ours.

Jesus skipped the revenge, and we should too.
