Jesus asked what the apostles thought about Him. Simon replies that He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Jesus is God too. Jesus acknowledges that this declaration could be possible only by a singular grace of faith from His Father in Heaven. Then, Jesus renames Simon as Peter, recognizing him for his future role in His Church as the Rock on which Jesus would establish His Church. He then gives him the power of the keys, to bind and to loosen on earth, and it will be recognized as such in Heaven. The gates of hell will not prevail against the Catholic Church. Indestructible until the end of time! But, curiously, Jesus reveals to them that He was destined to suffer and die at the hands of His enemies. The same Peter objects to this. Jesus reprimands him by calling him Satan and that he needs to stay clear of Him. Peter still needed more formation and grace to grasp the role of suffering in salvation of man. This would take time and many lessons more, especially that of humility.
