Jesus continues to point out to the scholars of the scriptures what they were doing wrong. The scribes and pharisees were so particular of the external fulfillment of the Law, without having the interior movement of purification and repentance. What mattered a lot was their invention of so many demands in the fulfillment of the Law of Moses. They were so many and complicated that it was practically difficult to practice their religion well. Recall how the pharisees called the attention of the paralytic who was already walking, having been cured by Jesus, carrying his pallet because Jesus had told him so. The problem was that he was doing something prohibited on the Sabbath. Imagine that! Our Lord compared these hypocrites to whitewashed tombs. Externally, they were clean and polished, but inside the tombs was rottenness. Some scribes and pharisees were like that.
