Jesus makes this plain to us. Yesterday, we commented in the homily about the Lord preparing His disciples to go ahead of Him to the towns He would visit. They were to prepare the people there to receive Him. God appointed many prophets and other instruments of His to transmit to the Israelites His teachings to prepare them for the coming of the Messiah. St. John the Baptist was the last one, before Jesus Christ arrived. He was to prepare the way of the Lord. Hence, he called people to repent from their sins and get baptized in the waters of the Jordan River. We, too, are instruments of God. If we study well the doctrine of Jesus, then we will transmit it with His authority. Hence, Jesus assures His disciples that those who listen to them, are actually listening to Him. And if we listen to Jesus, we are actually listening to the One who sent Jesus to us.
