When God Seems Absent, Call Anyway. (Advent 4)

“There is no one who calls on your name or attempts to take hold of you, for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.” - Isaiah 64:7

There are times when God seems a long way away or absent altogether. Human cruelty and indifference, violence and injustice, callous neglect, fear and hate… It’s hard to feel the love of God when we are drowning in these.

The writer of Isaiah most certainly felt this. Things were as bad as they had ever been and it was hard for him or her to have any reasonable hope for things improving anytime soon. Despite this the writer refused to give up hope. The writer still called out to God.

In this season of Advent, we acknowledge just how difficult things are, how intractable and intransigent the challenges we face. Yet we refuse to give up hope.

We place our hope and trust in the arms of a loving God. We continue to call even if God seems distant or absent. We continue to believe that the way things are- are not the way they shall always be. Therefore we are determined to move forward in faith, hope, and love.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
