Supernatural: Shut Up, Dr. Phil (7x05) | Recap & Lore

Season 7 Episode 5 Published 2 years ago
Description

Supernatural Season 7, Episode 5, Shut Up, Dr. Phil recap 🧁 It's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reunion! Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters play Maggie and Don Stark, a centuries-old witch couple whose marital troubles are killing off half of Prosperity, Indiana, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Sam and Dean's solution? Marriage counseling.

The episode opens with a real estate agent getting fried under a salon's beehive hair dryer, followed by a man boiled in his hot tub and a contractor who meets a floating nail gun outside a porta-potty. Each scene has a 15th-century Wallachian coin, and dead plants are wilting around the victims' faces all over town. Meanwhile, Dean is waking up from nightmares, pouring morning whiskey, and getting super snippy with Sam, and Chet, the nacho cheese Leviathan, is still on their trail.

Episode Highlights:

  • Death by beehive hair dryer (we'll never sit under one again)
  • Sam's morning run, and Dean calling him Lance Armstrong
  • The nail gun outside the porta-potty, our goriest moment of the episode
  • Sam's excuse to snoop through the house: I need to take a dump
  • A cupcake with a tiny beating heart inside it (poor Jenny)
  • A martini with one olive and one eyeball
  • The paintings melting at the art auction
  • The bees attacking Dean mid-counseling session
  • The Starks' history: Christopher Columbus? A Medici? (We need that flashback spinoff.)
  • Chet, the nacho cheese Leviathan, and Don's suggestion: find a bottomless pit

The verdict: a fun, character-focused witch episode with just the right amount of gore, and Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters had such great chemistry, probably from all those years on Buffy together. (Our one note: sync up those incantation hands next time!)

In the lore segment, we bust four myths about witches: that the accused were actually witches (about 90,000 people were accused in early modern Europe, around half were executed, and most were targets of interpersonal grudges), that witches were only women (in Iceland, over 90 percent of the accused were men), that today's Wicca and pagan traditions date back to that era (most emerged in the 20th century), and that science ended witchcraft beliefs (it didn't, and scientists were often fascinated by magic).

Dean: "It's kind of like Bewitched, you know? Don's Darren doesn't even know it. Lots of laughs until you cheat on your wife."
Sam: "Witch reference, really?"
Dean: "Dude, Nicole Kidman was in the remake. Redhead, hello."

Your turn, hunters: Who wants a Stark flashback spinoff? And should Sam and Dean start a couples counseling practice? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
