Description
Supernatural Season 7, Episode 4, Defending Your Life recap ⚖️ Osiris (Faran Tahir), the Egyptian god of the dead, is putting guilty people on trial in a barn courtroom, and when Dean ends up in the defendant's chair, Sam steps in as his lawyer, and Jo Harvelle (Alona Tal) takes the stand, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Fun fact: The title shares its name with the 1991 Albert Brooks film Defending Your Life, which is also about being judged after death.
But first, a correction straight from the source: Ben Edlund himself let us know that "NC-17 schiznickel" was just his CW-friendly way of saying gory body parts, not dicks. (Guy Bee also weighed in, and agreed it looked pretty phallic.) Then it's on to Dearborn, Michigan, where a man is chased by a car straight into his 10th floor apartment, another is mauled by a dog in a locked bathroom, and every victim has a guilty conscience and some distinctive red dirt nearby. Dean, meanwhile, is getting agitated with this case, and Sam is starting to wonder why.
Episode Highlights:
- Dean's license to kill joke, and LA's wheezing laugh
- A very polite German Shepherd in a locked bathroom, and our 50th blood splooge of the series!
- Warren, the ex-con we were rooting for so hard
- Robert Singer's classic-ghost hotel scene: flickering lights, a creepy TV, and a broken salt line
- Sam demanding to be Dean's lawyer, and Osiris loving every minute of it
- Jo on the witness stand
- Osiris' threat to call a third witness (we know exactly who you mean)
- Sam's very quick trip to a synagogue for a ram's horn (we need to hear that conversation)
- A Dean guilt answer we've been waiting on since Bloody Mary
The verdict: written by Adam Glass and directed by Robert Singer. Osiris was handsome, playful, and just on the right side of campy, and we wanted MORE of that courtroom set. (Our one costume note: lose the judge's robe, give him a gold chest plate and a crown.)
In the lore segment, we dig into Osiris, the Egyptian lord of the underworld and judge of the dead: son of Geb and Nut, murdered by his brother Set and brought back by his sister-wife Isis, originally a god of fertility and agriculture (the apple farm makes sense now!), depicted with green or black skin, a crook and flail, and the Atef crown, and associated with the Bennu bird that inspired the Phoenix. Also known as the beautiful one. We told you he was hot.
Sam: "Objection."
Osiris: "On what grounds?"
Sam: "Witness being called without prior notice."
Dean: "Good one."
Sam: "Saw it on The Good Wife."
Your turn, hunters: Could YOU win a case in Osiris' courtroom? And who do you think the third witness would have been? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it's how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
