278. When We Correct, We Start with Asking

Welcome back to the kitchen table. In gospel-centered conversations during correction, Bethany reminds us that the goal is to seek clarity—both for ourselves and our children. Rather than diving into a lecture, we should start by simply asking, “What happened? Why are you here with me?”

This approach helps ensure that we see all parts of the situation, just as God does. Instead of focusing on what we already know, we encourage our children to make their own connections by asking thoughtful questions.

When we connect with our kids and avoid accusing them, their hearts stay open. Rushing to judgment or assuming facts can quickly shut them down, but by asking good questions and truly listening, we gain clarity and understanding. Our role is to guide, not accuse, and in doing so, we reflect God's patience and wisdom.
