Supernatural: Hello, Cruel World (7x02) | Recap & Lore

Season 7 Episode 2 Published 2 years, 1 month ago
Description

Supernatural Season 7, Episode 2, Hello, Cruel World recap 🌊 Picking up right after the premiere, the Leviathans are loose, hitching a ride through the town's water supply, while Sam's Lucifer hallucinations get darker, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus, Sheriff Jody Mills is back, and she's had a bad night at the hospital.

Campy, evil Leviathan Cas is leaking black goo from every orifice, and he goes for an ill-advised swim in the local reservoir. Before long, a little girl at a water fountain and a mechanic named Edgar (Benito Martinez) are possessed, a Leviathan picks up some ideas from an episode of Dr. Sexy, M.D., and the boys are investigating a high school locker room with, as the forensics guy so delicately put it, a boatload of NC-17 schiznickel. Meanwhile, Jody (Kim Rhodes) is recovering from surgery at a hospital where the charming new doctor is suddenly VERY into livers.

Episode Highlights:

  • Leviathan Cas, going full here's Johnny, and Misha clearly eating it up
  • Dean holding onto that trench coat
  • Sam admitting he can see Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) right now, and Bobby's response: I'm gonna go
  • The NC-17 schiznickel. We paused. We rewound. We still have questions.
  • Three blood splooges (#47, #48, and #49), all a little chunky
  • The shadow behind the hospital curtain, and a doctor who's not who he used to be
  • Jody waddling down the hallway with her IV bag, investigating in her hospital gown
  • Hallucination Dean, and how we knew it wasn't really Dean (great job, Jensen)
  • Dean squeezing Sam's stitched-up hand to keep him grounded

The verdict: written by Ben Edlund (Hey Ben, what was up with the dicks?) and directed by Guy Bee. More soap opera than artsy horror this time, with three splooges, a lot of black goo, and plenty of dramatic cliffhangers. And still no answers about what happened in Albuquerque.

In the lore segment, we dig into Archangel Cassiel, the angel of tears and temperance, known by some as the archangel of duality: ruler of the seventh heaven, tied to Saturn and the angel of time, said to speak to dolphins, and often depicted riding a dragon. (Our Castiel has not fared nearly as well.)

"I know you're bonkers, but luckily, I need you to keep the engine running and wait by the back door. Just don't let Satan change my presets." – Hallucination Dean
