The actress, who was also recently seen in the short film Rebel Girl, talks about working in period pieces set in the 1960s, and what it was like playing a younger version of Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor after having played younger versions of characters of Oprah and Octavia Spencer in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Ma. Simmone also talks about the importance of platonic friendships that the film portrays, as well as why she trained to be a boxer, and how the lyrics to Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance” have been a guiding light for her career.
