Discipline Your Tongue

Season 6 Episode 15

Send us a text

“If any think they are religious and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless.” - James 1:26

Some of you like me, grew up with the understanding that you never want to let your mouth write a check your behind can’t cash.

While this is true, the principle is even deeper than that. Genesis one describes God creating the cosmos and everything in it through the words God spoke.

Being made in God’s image, our words have the power to create and to destroy, to build up and tear down. We simply cannot be a blessing to anyone if we are careless with our words.

Before speaking consider these questions:

  1. Is it true?
  2. Does it need to be said?
  3. Does it need to said by me?
  4. Does it need to be said by me now?
  5. How do I say it with kindness?

Speaking the true is not a justification for being rude, mean or spiteful. We make it hard if not impossible for people to hear us when we speak like that. We are called to “speak the truth in love.” (Ephesians 4:15)

We have to discipline our tongues or we make the faith claim to follow worthless.
