Sure, it would likely have made more sense to name the two continents Columbia after Christopher Columbus, or for the Native Americans who had been here for centuries before, or even for the Vikings who beat the explorer by hundreds of years. But no. America is named after an Italian explorer named Amerigo Vespucci.
